CHELSEA — The Chelsea City Council voted 8-0 to adopt a resolution urging state lawmakers to fully fund youth employment programs after dozens of students and teachers packed the chamber over school funding. The resolution warns a proposed 40 percent state cut would shrink youth jobs statewide from 6,000 to 3,400, and urges a $10 million fiscal 2026 supplemental budget by May 1 plus another $10 million in fiscal 2027. Councilor-at-Large Leo Robinson said the city's total school commitment this year is "actually $10 million," not the $2 million cited by speakers.
Resident J.V. Hunter told the council the $2 million "is a start, but it is not enough." Councilors also confirmed three board appointments 10-0 and debated a city proposal to overhaul 2017 inclusionary zoning rules, rejecting a motion to send it to the planning subcommittee 1-9 and instead referring it to the Subcommittee on Conference.
