School Committee · Meeting of March 12, 2026
CHELSEA — Overflow crowd forced the Chelsea School Committee to scrap its meeting over fire-code violations. The committee chair said she had "never seen this amount of people show up in this room" in 17 years, even during larger budget cuts, after attendees packed the room beyond capacity ahead of a planned discussion on cuts. A fire marshal and police were called in, and committee counsel, identified only as Veronica, said relocating the meeting on short notice would violate the 48-hour public posting requirement under open meeting law.
Officials ultimately canceled the session and rescheduled it for the following Tuesday evening at a larger venue, with each speaker to get two minutes of public comment. The only formal action taken was a motion to adjourn.
